Chelsea Manning joins Twitter despite not having Internet access

Under the handle @xychelsea, imprisoned Wikileaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning made her debut on Twitter on Friday (3 April).

In one of her 15 tweets, Manning explained to 22,000-plus followers how she tweets without access to the Internet.

‘Tweeting from prison reqs a lot of effort and using a voice phone to dictate,’ she wrote.

Fitzgibbon Media, which is handling her account, confirmed to Mashable that Manning will be making daily calls to dictate the tweets.

Among her other first day tweets:

  • Starting with a shout out to the friends who have always stood by me and so many others
  • I’m hoping to stay connected w/ this account as much as poss., but would rather tweet about more meaningful things than not
  • For those of you asking: I plan to tweet as freq. as possible; daily to weekly

Manning, 27, is a former US soldier jailed for 35 years for leaking more than 700,000 secret military documents while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq.

She later announced to the world that she is transgender and is suing the US government for not providing her with the necessary medical treatment for gender dysphoria.
