Chinese gay dating app Blued gets 2 million users in first year

Chinese language gay dating app Blued has collected 2 million users in its first year since launching and now plans to launch Pinkd to capture the smart phone dating market for Chinese lesbians.

Blued launched in August of 2012 for both Apple and Android devices and as well as allowing users to chat and swap photos it also allows them to share content from Chinese language social media such as Weibo (often dubbed China’s Twitter) and Tencent QQ.

The startup firm behind the app, DanLan, is yet to seek to monetize its 2 million users but managed to attract a $3 million investment earlier this year.

Blued has had a home game advantage in capturing the mainland Chinese gay dating app market as Chinese authorities block some of the better known English language gay dating apps from being used in China.

It is estimated that there are as many as 25 million gay men in China but most are closeted and choose to marry to keep their parents happy.
