A gay student surprised his friend with a romantic setup and a public declaration of love on college campus.
The couple are students from Beijing Renmin University, and the ceremony involved an illuminated heart-shaped ring of lights and a mushy confession.
According to Whats On Weibo, the student spoke of his love for his friend in front of a crowd, saying, ‘I will be with you, not to play basketball, but to kiss you.’
Photos showing the couple went viral on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, and drew mixed reactions from netizens.
Some called the public display of affection ‘disgusting.’
One wrote: ‘Talking about discriminating gay people… won’t mankind perish if everyone’s gay? In my opinion, gay people should go and see a psychiatrist.’
Another remarked, ‘They are a disgrace to the university and when their parents see this, they’ll faint.’
But many more showed their support and encouragement for the two:
‘Love goes beyond gender, bless you!’ one commenter wrote.
Another expressed worry that the students might face punishment from the school: ‘If these students get expelled, I would really lose hope in Chinese universities.’
There are others who are happy for the couple for other reasons:
‘I’m happy, because this leaves two more single women for me,’ one said.
A netizen also remarked that it is better that they are honest with themselves, rather than to lie about it and get into fake marriages.
In China, it’s estimated that there are around 20 million men are either gay or bisexual, and 80% of them have married a straight woman.
