Colton Haynes officially came out as a gay man on Thursday (5 May).
‘I felt like I was letting people down by not coming forward,’ the former Teen Wolf and Arrow star tells Entertainment Weekly.
Haynes, 27, had seemed to coyly come out in January when asked on Tumblr about a ‘secret gay past.’ He replied: ‘Was it a secret? Let’s all just enjoy life & have no regrets :)’
He tells EW the onslaught of media coverage took him by surprise and he offered no follow-up at that time although he remained active on Instagram – particularly during New York Fashion Week.
‘It was a complete shock. I wasn’t ready to be back in the headlines,’ he said of the Tumblr incident.
‘I should have made a comment or a statement, but I just wasn’t ready. I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet.’
Haynes spoke of the stress of the life of a gay closeted actor. ‘People want you to be that GQ image that you put out, but people don’t realize what it’s like to act 24 hours a day,’ he says. ‘I’d go home and I was still acting…People who are so judgmental about those who are gay or different don’t realize that acting 24 hours a day is the most exhausting thing in the world.’
While Haynes had remained private about his own personal life, he has been publicly supportive and often posts photos of his brother and his husband, and their daughter.
In 2011, legal representatives for the former Abercrombie & Fitch model sent cease and desist letters to bloggers who posted photos from the now defunct gay teenage magazine XY that featuring Haynes kissing another male model in a March 2006 issue.
