Conchita Wurst announced as headline act for London Pride

Eurovision superstar Conchita Wurst has been announced as the headline act for London gay pride 2014, which kicks off in just a few days.

In a video posted to the Facebook account of Pride London, Wurst said she cannot wait to come and perform.

‘I’m totally excited because I will be in London in a few days and I hope that I’m going to see each and every one of you,’ she said.

Wurst rose to prominence when she entered the Eurovision song contest 2014 to represent her native Austria, she took home the title for her country after being voted as the winner with her song Rise Like A Phoenix.

She is now instantly recognizable for her trademark beard and long dresses, and she has become a brand new LGBTI icon too.

However, the Austrian drag star has divided opinion all over the world.

Some thought her mere presence of a man in a dress and heels in the competition was an abomination. An online petition in Russia saw some men shave off their beards in protest of Wurst winning Eurovision.

However, others praised her bravery. Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Catholic Archbishop of Vienna, commended Wurst saying she deserves the same respect as everyone else.

Furthermore, her winning song Rise Like A Phoenix has been topping the charts, even in unlikely places such as Russia.

Wurst’s performance at London pride is set to take place in Trafalgar Square on 28 June.

The theme of this year’s pride is #FreedomTo, and also performing at London pride are singers Heather Peace, Sam Fox and Sinitta.
