Conservative advocate questions Liz Cheney’s patriotism because she supports gay marriage

Bryan Fischer, the spokesperson for the conservative organization American Family Association, has come out against Liz Cheney’s bid to join the US Senate.

The conservative commentator is worried the candidate, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, lacks his anti-gay fervor.

Fischer acknowledged Cheney has all the right positions when it comes to foreign policy but ‘she will fight for the team wearing lavender instead of the team wearing red, white and blue.’

As reported by the site Right Wing Watch, Fischer spent a 17 July blog post slamming her support for the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

‘She supported the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which is driving values-based members of the military out of the service and ushering in militant homosexuals,’ Fischer wrote.

‘Currently, 55-60% of  all sexual assaults in the military now, thanks in part to the DADT repeal, are committed by homosexuals,’ he continued.

Fischer finished by asserting Cheney, a former State Department official in President George W. Bush’s administration, is not a patriot.

This week Cheney announced she would challenge Wyoming Senator Mike Enzi, a fellow Republican. The two will meet in a primary next year; the winner face a Democrat in the 2014 general election.

Columnist Jennifer Rubin, writing for the Washington Post, thinks the challenger will be good for Republicans when it comes to gay issues.

‘She likely would be another GOP voice for gay marriage (although she has not be as definitive as some would like), and thereby an important force to drag her party into the 21st century,’ Rubin wrote.
