New York City Pride has announced the line up for its hotly anticipated opening ceremony.
Hosting this year’s Wolrd Pride, the event will also mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising which started the LGBTI liberation movement.
Pride events span the whole month, culminating in the famous NYC Pride March on Sunday 30 June.
Iconic Cyndi Lauper will take the stage
Actress, comedian and activist Whoopi Goldberg will host the event. It will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on 26 June.
The evening will also feature a performance by iconic singer Cyndi Lauper.
An LGBTI ally, Lauper founded the True Colors Fund, a nonprofit that educates people on LGBTI issues and helps to end homelessness for LGBTI youth.
‘I am thrilled to be a part of the WorldPride Opening Ceremony,’ said Lauper.
‘I can’t wait to celebrate with my LGBTI friends and family from across the world.’
Ciara and Todrick Hall will also perform
Moreover, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, producer, model and actress Ciara will take the stage.
Singer, actor and YouTube personality Todrick Hall will join.
And NYC nightlife legend, DJ Lina, will spin on the 1s and 2s for a remarkable evening.
Tickets will go on sale on 12 April. Ticket proceeds will benefit SAGE, a charity serving LGBTI elders.
Grace Jones to headline Pride Island 2019
In March, NYC Pride has announced its first phase of talent performing at the Multi-day Pride Island 2019.
The two-day festival will see iconic singer Grace Jones take the Pier 97 stage.
The Jamaican-born singer and actress is the biggest name among those announced for Saturday 29 June.
‘I couldn’t be more excited to perform in front of my LGBTI friends and the community that’s supported me for so many years during WorldPride 2019,’ said Jones, who reportedly dated both men and women.
‘Saturday’s Pride Island lineup will be a celebration of everything that the community stands for and will go down in illustrious history.’
