Cynthia Nixon tells New Yorkers: ‘Vote for the homo, not for the Cuomo’

Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon, Sex and the City star-turned-New York gubernatorial candidate, created a new slogan for her campaign recently.

On Tuesday (8 May) night, Nixon appeared at the annual Legislative Correspondents Association dinner. In her speech, she didn’t hold back in her comments about the state’s current governor, Andrew Cuomo.

The comment that received the biggest applaused came at the end, and it’s not hard to see why: ‘Vote for the homo, not for the Cuomo.’

If she ultimately wins, she’ll be the first female and first LGBTQ governor of New York.

A speech full of history

The clever slogan is not entirely Nixon’s to claim.

It stems from the 1977 New York City mayoral campaign. In that election, Ed Koch ran against Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo. Then, Cuomo’s team put up slogans reading: ‘Vote for Cuomo, Not the Homo.’

It’s not the only thing from the past Nixon brought up in her speech.

She discussed Cuomo’s own criticism of her and dealt it back. ‘Cuomo thinks that I should stick to acting, but after seeing Cuomo try to play the part of a progressive, I think he should stick to politics,’ she said. ‘His performance has not been very convincing of late. You might say he’s an unqualified thespian.’

This was a jab at Christine Quinn calling her an ‘unqualified lesbian’ (though she identifies as bisexual).

Finally, she recommended Cuomo come out — as a Republican.

‘Andrew, it’s okay to come out and live openly as you are. Your donors won’t love you any less.’
