Dating app to alert users when they enter countries where gay sex is illegal

Gay dating app Scruff is to add a new traveller alert for users entering countries where gay sex and homosexuality are illegal.

The step follows safety concerns after a man in Saudi Arabia claimed police had used the app to entrap and deport an friend.

Speaking to the New York Times, co-founder and chief executive of Scruff Eric Silverberg explained the move.

‘This feature of the GPS-enabled app that was so exciting for us here in the United States, being able to meet guys nearby, became something of a liability for our members that were in other regions and other countries where homosexuality is criminalized,’ he said.

The new version of the app will also give users the option of reporting other users they suspect of trying to entrap them.

The Scruff website also has a dedicated webpage with information on same-sex activity in various countries.

Homosexual activity is still punishable by death in countrues such as Iraq, Iran and Nigeria.
