Lovesick actor and musician Johnny Flynn will portray rock legend David Bowie in the upcoming biopic Stardust.

Flynn will be the bisexual British icon in the movie from Salon Pictures. The film tracks the rise of the superstar and it will feature his first visit to the US in 1971.

The Neon Demon actress Jena Malone and GLOW’s Marc Maron will also star as Bowie’s then-wife Angie and his record company publicist.

Emmy-winning filmmaker Gabriel Range will direct the script by Christopher Bell. Principal photography will begin in June 2019.

David Bowie’s son weighed in on the conversation

Despite the excitement of fans, not everyone seems to be thrilled about the project.

Bowie’s son Duncan Jones took to social media, saying he was not aware of the movie. He also pointed out ‘nobody has been granted music rights’ for it.

‘I think this journalist needs to do some investigative reporting,’ he tweeted, referring to an article of The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… I would know.’

‘Im not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn’t know.

‘Im saying that as it stands, this movie won’t have any of dads music in it, & I can’t imagine that changing. If you want to see a biopic without his music or the families blessing, thats up to the audience,’ he added in a subsquent tweet.

The BBC documentaries

Brixton-born Bowie passed away in January 2016.

A BBC documentary called David Bowie: The First Five Years, the third installment in a documentary trilogy covering the late rocker’s career, will also premiere on BBC Two 2019.

The First Five Years follows 2013’s Five Years, about five fruitful years in Bowie’s career, and 2017’s The Last Five Years, which covered the productive period toward the end of his life.
