DC Comics’ Batwoman proposes to girlfriend

The latest issue of the DC Comics title Batwoman sees the main character proposing to her girlfriend.

In the issue, Kate Kane asks police captain Maggie Sawyer to be her wife after revealing her superhero identity.

After emerging victorious from a recent battle, Kane is seen embracing her partner.

‘Marry me, Mags,’ she says, before she plants a kiss on Sawyer before the cop can react.

UK-based comic book review site Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnson said ‘there’s no guarantee we’re going to hear wedding bells.’

‘But I think that’s a story,’ he said. ‘I’ve been talking about how much I love this comic for some time, I think it’s DC’s best. Now I’ve just been given another reason.

Batwoman’s proposal, the first lesbian engagement in a mainstream comic, comes on the heels of DC Comics naming anti-gay author Orson Scott Card to pen upcoming issues of Superman.

Last year, DC Comics reinvented the original Green Lantern Alan Scott as gay in Earth 2.

Batwoman #20 debuted yesterday (20 February).
