Democrats introduce articles of impeachment against Trump

Rep. Steve Cohen is calling for Trump's impeachment

Six House Democrats introduced articles of impeachment against Donald Trump in a press conference today (15 November).

The Democrats include Rep. Al Green, Steve Cohen, Luis Gutierrez, Marcia Fudge, John Yarmuth, and Adriano Espaillat.

They cited five articles of impeachment against the president.

  1. Obstruction of justice
  2. Foreign Emoluments
  3. Domestic Emoluments
  4. Undermining the Independence of the Federal Judiciary and the Rule of Law
  5. Undermining the Freedom of the Press

Rep. Cohen, a ranking member on the House judiciary committee’s Constitution subcommittee, explained he and his fellow Congressmen are taking this option out of ‘great concern for our country and our Constitution, our national security and our democracy’.

‘We believe President Trump has violated the Constitution,’ he continued.

Here is a video of Cohen’s remarks at the press conference.

Not so fast

Not every Democrat supports this course of action.

Impeachment is a serious decision that must be approved by Congress. Currently, Republicans control the entirety of Congress, both the Senate and House of Representatives.

This makes a Democrat-led impeachment extremely difficult, which the representatives acknowledge.

‘I don’t expect the House judiciary committee, which is operated like a branch of the administration, to take up hearings,’ Cohen said.

Some Democrats, like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Whip Steny Hoyer, do not agree with impeachment at this time. Not only because of the difficulty, but so as to not rile Trump’s base or distract from Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation into Trump and the election.

This also highlights the importance of the midterm elections for the Democrats next year. Regardless of impeachment or not, taking back control of the Senate, House, or both, gives them a leg up they’ve yet to firmly hold under Trump.

It’s also why the Democrats’ various election wins last week were so crucial.

While it’s unlikely these impeachment articles will go anywhere, introducing them at all was a bold move.
