Director James Gunn hinted there may be a gay character or subplot in Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to introduce a LGBTI character.
So it was only natural to ask the director, returning to direct and write the space ensemble superhero film, whether he considered featuring a gay protagonist in the franchise.
Speaking at the movie’s world premiere in Hollywood, he said: ‘Absolutely. I would love to be able to.
‘We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.’
It comes after mainstream cinema has made tentative steps to include LGBTI characters.
In the new Power Rangers film, yellow ranger Trini was asked whether she might be having ‘girlfriend problems’.
And in Beauty and the Beast, director Bill Condon said LeFou was ‘confused about his sexuality’ and described a brief scene of dancing as the film’s ‘gay moment’.
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel reprise their roles in the forthcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel.
Gunn will also be writing and directing the third in the franchise.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be released in the UK on 28 April and in the US on 5 May.
