Disgraced professor calls transgender identity ‘confusions’ in article for Associated Press

McHugh has a long history of opposing LGBTI civil rights movements, calling homosexuality an 'erroneous desire'

In order to clarify a story about several transgender students in Pennsylvania, Associated Press sought the ‘expertise’ of discredited professor Paul McHugh.

The published article concerns three transgender students at a Pennsylvania high school who have sued their school district for forcing them to use bathrooms according to their biological sex.

‘Policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention,’ McHugh said. The quote comes from an article he wrote in 2014.

McHugh’s opinion was used to contrast other opinions in support of the students.

His fellow faculty members at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine in Maryland have tried to distance themselves from McHugh.

Almost 700 of them have formally called for Johns Hopkins to make it clear it does not support McHugh’s beliefs, which has been described as ‘pseudoscience’.

They said McHugh’s research is ‘mischaracterizing’ LGBTI people, and will ‘further stigmatize and harm the health of LGBTQ communities.’
