Doctor Who fans speculate over possible LGBT-themed episode

The BBC has sparked online chatter about an LGBTI-themed Doctor Who plot after posting a picture of a promo.

Fans began speculating about an LGBTI-themed special episode after the BBC posted a photo of Jodie Whittaker, who plays the 13th Doctor, wearing a rainbow scarf.

There is speculation that there might be a romance between the Doctor and her companion, Yasmin ‘Yaz’ Khan.

It has been previously hinted that Yaz could be bisexual.

What could it mean?

There has been plenty of excitement online, with numerous Twitter users quick to point out the LGBTI imagery.

The anticipation has been fuelled by the show’s executive producer, Matt Strevens, who said that there would be characters from the LGBT spectrum in the new series, the Mail Online reports.

‘It is part, I think, of the DNA that [ex-writer of the series] Russell [T Davies] re-imbued into the show…There will be characters from across the spectrum,’ said Strevens.

Standing on the shoulders of giant scarves

While discussions focused on the LGBTI symbolism of Whittaker’s costume, others were quick to make the connection with previous Doctor Who iconography.

Scarves have a special place in Doctor Who lore.

Tom Baker, who played the Doctor from 1974-81, famously donned an oversized scarf.

Often seen as the trademark of Baker’s Doctor, fans were quick to make comparisons between the two.
