Dolly Parton said her gay fans and drag queens inspired the music she composed for Netflix film Dumplin.
The country music star co-wrote six new tunes for the movie, including theme tune, ‘Girl in the Movies’.
Dumplin is a musical comedy based on Julie Murphy’s book of the same name. It tells the story of a former beauty queen, played by Jennifer Aniston and her plus-sized teenage daughter (Danielle Macdonald). Inspired by the music of Dolly Parton, the daughter enters a beauty pageant herself.
Drag scenes were among Dolly Parton’s faves
Parton told celebrity news site Deadline.com that the drag scenes were among her favourites from the film.
‘I have a huge gay following and the drag queens have always loved me because they’re flamboyant and so am I, and it kind of gives them a little freedom, and they’ve always loved to dress like me because they can kind of over-exaggerate it.’
Parton also said she was humbled by the storyline tribute to her iconic reputation.

‘When the book first came out, I was really touched by it, and I was surprised. And then when they made it into a movie, I thought, ‘I’d be careful. I’ll get in it and it’ll look like I’m on some ego trip or something.
‘But they asked me to write their music, so I was happy to do that…to let them use it, because that is very touching to me to feel like I’ve been an inspiration even to the little girl that wrote the book, and then to play it up like that, it’s nice.’
Parton’s glamour popular among drag queens
At 72 years young, Parton has been entertaining the world with her unique and inspirational talent. The country singer is also a favourite among drag artists.
The star’s hit song Jolene was covered by stars of top drag show Ru Paul’s Drag Race earlier this month.
