‘The word “gay” used to be a word that the meaning was being jolly, being happy, and now they’ve added another meaning to it and they define themselves as “gay people”,’ Mel Villarreal told Valley Central.com.
Villarreal said while he doesn’t have anything ‘against gay people, it’s just that it has that meaning’.
The couple were hoping to change the name to Los Unicos Street, a tribute to Villarreal’s former band.
They managed to get 11 out of the 12 residents of Gay Drive to sign the petition, but Pharr City Commission said there was no reason to get rid of the name.
The petition was struck down in a 6-1 vote, with concerns that a change could affect emergency ervives.
Beatriz Gonzales, who originally signed the petition, admitted that she had seconds thoughts about it.
‘Everybody might have to change all their paperwork, you know, all their documents,’ she said.
