Ellen DeGeneres hilariously responds to Eric Trump’s Deep State claim

Ellen responds to Eric Trump's claim that she's part of the 'Deep State' conspiracy

Donald Trump’s son, Eric, took to Twitter to suggest comedian Ellen DeGeneres is running a shadow government. In response, DeGeneres used her platform to hilariously clap back at the ludicrous claim.

In a since-deleted Tweet posted on 3 January, Trump said, ‘Shocking. Once again, here are the Twitter “suggestions” of who I should follow. #DeepState.’

Trump is referring to the accounts Twitter’s algorithm suggested he follow. On the list was lesbian comedian Ellen DeGeneres, as well as politicians Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Using the hashtag #DeepState, Trump is co-signing a conspiracy theory started by Steve Bannon during the 2016 presidential election. It refers to a secret shadow network of lurking within the government’s bureaucracy with the goal of undermining elected officials — which, in this case, is the Trump Administration.

Trump was quickly mocked on Twitter for espousing this conspiracy.

‘So… you think the “deep state” makes these recommendations? You think FBI and CIA agents are responsible for Twitter’s suggestion that you follow certain people on Twitter? You should focus more on “deep paranoia,”’ one user replied.

Twitter’s algorithm

It’s unclear why Twitter recommended liberals like DeGeneres to Trump. The algorithm makes its suggestions based on various criteria, all of which stem from the user’s habits.

‘Account suggestions on Twitter are based on many factors, including your address book contacts (if you have chosen to upload them) as well as patterns from your following history,’ Twitter says on their website. ‘These suggestions are generated by algorithms, which means you may or may not know the accounts or find them relevant.’

Ellen’s response

In response to Trump’s suggestion, DeGeneres used her show’s platform to hilariously debunk this conspiracy.

‘I have some questions,’ the comedian said. ‘First of all, which one is Eric? Did he kill the elephant or the cheetah? Which one? Second, what is “deep state”? Is it near Dollywood? Because I’m in if it is.’

‘It’s the craziest thing I’ve seen all week,’ DeGeneres said. ‘Apparently, Eric Trump thinks that Twitter is trying to trick him into following liberals. Apparently, I’m part of some secret government conspiracy called the Deep State. I found out Deep State is supposed to be a group of people they believe is trying to undermine Donald Trump — which is ridiculous because no one undermines Donald Trump more than Donald Trump.’

‘I just want to say, Eric, I’m honored that you think I’m powerful enough to be part of a government conspiracy. I’m sorry to disappoint you, I am not part of the Deep State. Even if someone wanted me to be involved, I don’t have that kind of time. I’ve got my Gay Agenda meetings on Mondays, on Wednesdays Beyonce and I host an Illuminati Brunch, and then Portia and I on the weekends are desperately trying to have a baby. So I can’t. I don’t have time.’

‘But there’s probably another explanation as to why Twitter suggested you follow me. I mean, it could be a conspiracy or it could be because your sister Ivanka follows me on Twitter. And your sister Tiffany follows me on Twitter. And maybe you should follow me, because I post a lot of cute videos.’
