When Ellen DeGeneres begun her show today, audience members could see the always calm and collected host was nervous.
It was because the gay co-host was to talk about something she hadn’t spoken out in public for 12 years.
DeGeneres was joining the Me Too campaign.

The Me Too campaign was started by Alyssa Milano.
She wrote: ‘If all women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote, “Me Too”, as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.’
Millions of people have come out to say #MeToo on Twitter and Facebook.
Celebrities to have said this include Reese Witherspoon, Rose McGowan, Lady Gaga and Anna Paquin.

On her show today, DeGeneres joined their numbers.
‘I applaud them all. I think it’s brave and I think it’s important to speak out and not be shamed by anyone. It is not always easy but we have to do that.
‘That’s why I posted, and that’s why I’m saying it out loud, me too.’
Fighting back tears, she added: ‘This is not a male thing or a female thing. This is not a Hollywood or a political thing – this is a human thing.
It happens in the workplace, it happens in families, and it happens all over the world. We are all the same thing. We all want the same thing, we want respect love and kindness.
‘If we can have all those three things and a new iPhone 10 I’ll be happy,’ she added with a joke.
Applauding everyone who had spoken out, DeGeneres said there was ‘power in numbers’.
While it is unknown whether she was referring to this incident, it is possible she was speaking about being molested by her mother’s third husband as a teenager.
Molested as a teenager by a family member
In 2005, she told Allure magazine she was ’16 or 17′ when her stepfather demanded to touch her breast.
Her stepfather told her: ‘He thinks he feels a lump in (my mother’s) other breast, but he doesn’t want to alarm her so he needs to feel mine to make sure.’
DeGeneres said the man, who she did not name, is now dead.
‘[He] made me lie down because he said he felt hers while she was lying down,’ she told Allure.
And while she does not say how long the abuse lasted, she added her stepfather once tried to break down her bedroom door.
‘I had to kick a window out and escape and sleep in a hospital all night long.’
