- Ellen DeGeneres’ mom Betty asks: ‘Why am I letting her do this?’
Ellen DeGeneres’ family is struggling with lockdown hair just as much as anyone.
And now the lesbian daytime chatshow host has taken the clippers to her mom Betty’s curly white locks – to celebrate her 90th birthday.
In a video posted on Instagram, a nervous looking Betty doesn’t look entirely convinced by the gift. She asks: ‘Why am I letting her do this?’
But daughter Ellen, herself aged 62, reassured her mom: ‘It’s not that short mother. It’s just taking the edges off.’
Betty asked: ‘Why don’t you use scissors?’
In response, Ellen joked: ‘Believe me, you don’t want me using scissors.’
Moreover, once the cut was done and Betty checked it out in the mirror, she seemed a little more reassured.
Ellen asked if she liked the trim and the 90-year-old replied: ‘Not yet. But once I wash it… Oh, you really cut it short.’
‘It angers me when victims aren’t believed’
Ellen spoke about her close relationship with her mom last year in an interview with David Letterman.
She said: ‘I always have taken care of her my whole life. So I just kept taking care of her.’
However, she said they had been through some trying times.
DeGeneres’ stepfather groped her breasts several times when she was 15 or 16. He claimed he was looking for lumps.
But the young Ellen hid the truth from her mom to protect her.
She said: ‘I didn’t want to tell my mother because I was protecting her and I knew that would ruin her happiness.’
Even after the truth came out, Betty stayed with him initially. But she finally left him ‘because he’d change the story so many times.’
DeGeneres said she shared her story to help other young girls in a similar position.
She said: ‘When I see people speaking out, especially now, it angers me when victims aren’t believed. Because we just don’t make stuff up.
‘And I like men, but there are so many men that get away with so much.’
She first spoke about the incident in 2005. And in 2017 she raised it on her show to support the #MeToo movement.
