British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran received a congratulatory phone call from mentor Elton John wishing him good luck following the announcement of the Brit Award nominees last Thursday.
Sheeran, 21, leads this year's awards with four nominations for Best Male Solo Act, Best Breakthrough Act, Mastercard British Album of the Year for his album + and Best British Single for his song A Team.
Sheeran told The Sun: 'I speak to Elton on a weekly basis. He's very involved. I got a talk from him after the BRITs nominations.
'He's overseas at the moment but left me an answer phone message. He said I've smashed it so hard and good luck.
'It's always good to hear from Elton. He's a lovely guy and is very passionate about the music. He wants me to be huge all over the world, and I'm up for that too.'
Elton was attending the Golden Globes ceremony last night where he was nominated for Best Original Song from a Motion feature for his song Hello Hello from the animated movie Gnomeo & Juliet. Other nominees included Mary J Blige, Chris Cornell and Madonna.
Earlier in the evening, Elton discussed his fellow nominees in a red carpet interview, stating that 'Madonna doesn't have a fucking change of winning tonight.' When asked if 'those were fighting words?', Elton replied: 'No, those are accurate words.'
Elton lost the award to Madonna and her song Masterpiece from the film WE.
Elton faced further embarrassment when Ricky Gervais introduced Madonna to the stage to present the award for Best Foreign Film, quipping: 'Our next presenter is the queen of pop, not you Elton, sit down!'
