Elton John’s estranged mother hires lookalike to perform and now they’re friends

Elton John's mom is hoping this one doesn't go breaking her heart...

Elton John and his 90-year-old mother, Sheila Farebrother, don’t speak.

The 68-year-old singer-songwriter hasn’t spoken to her in a while, so Sheila has hired an Elton John impersonator to fill the son-shaped hole in her life.

The rift goes back to March when the real Elton refused to attend his mother’s 90th birthday. So she hired a lookalike, Paul Bacon, to perform instead.

Mom and pseudo-son have since struck up a friendship.

‘She’s keeping in touch, which is very nice,’ Bacon told The Times. ‘I get the odd email from her, which for me is quite surreal, given what I do. She genuinely loves the music. This is kind of a nod to him.’

Bacon says he doesn’t know why Elton’s mother is so taken with him (any guesses?), but suggests ‘it’s a way of keeping in touch with the music’.

‘We do talk about him,’ he added. ‘From my point of view, it’s fascinating as a fan to hear some of the stories I’ve heard through the media and to hear them at first hand.’

But what does the real Elton think? He has yet to comment on the odd friendship.
