Elton John’s greatest genius and diva moments

Elton John has announced he is retiring | Photo: Instagram @EltonJohn

Russian pranksters once tricked him into thinking he was speaking to the Russian president. Donald Trump blasts his music so loud staff can’t hear themselves think. And his parties are legendary.

And now, Elton John has announced he’ll be retiring from touring the world.

In true luxurious style he live-streamed the reveal from a glorious room on YouTube in Virtual Reality.

If you had the luxury of wearing VR goggles to see the announcement, as we’re sure Elton does, you could get up close and personal to the superstar. It also crashed his website too.

After a performance of Tiny Dancer and a tongue and cheek choice of I’m Still Dancing – he announced he’d step back after his new farewell Yellow Brick Road, three-year world tour.

‘My priorities have changed in my life,’ he told host Anderson Cooper.

Adding that having children ‘changed his life’ and he didn’t want to miss his kids growing up.

But what are his greatest genius and diva moments?

Here at Gay Star News, we’ve got your back. In no particular order, the gay man, entertainer and diva’s most iconic moments:

This performance on the Muppets of Crocodile rock is EVERYTHING

Back when he and Susie were having so much fun, he performed with the Muppets.

Set on a swamp, he wore an outfit made up of more feathers than even a Peacock would find tasteful – and he obviously rocked it like no-one else could.

With the Muppets as backing singers, the performance is something else.

It was the first of many number one singles by the singer in the US.

Queen of kids TV, and King of Disney

Writing the soundtrack to legendary Disney movie the Lion King will live on in the childhood memories of so many.

Whether you are trying to feel the love tonight or live your life by screaming Hakuna Matta.

As the soundtrack won an Oscars, the highest accolade for any movie soundtrack.

So the circle of life is here stay and we have Elton to thank.

The singer once spent £293,000 on Flowers

In a 2000 court case, he defended the purchase by saying:

‘I like flowers. I don’t have any people to leave my money to, I’m a single man, I like to spend money. It’s my money to spend.”

It was all after Sir Elton began legal action after auditors found a £20 million hole in his finances in 1998. It was what led to the end of the singer’s 27-year partnership with boyfriend and manager John Reid.

Elton John

Elton John has diamond-encrusted sex toys

Yes, you heard that right. As a civil partnership present, rapper Eminem gave Elton John and his partner David Furnish cock rings.

And the best part? Eminem delicately placed them on two velvet cushions.

The revelations come to light on the Graham Norton Show.

The superstar fell out with a lot of people

From his ex-wife to his mom – he has had a series of long-running fall outs.

But, he has also had a series of make-ups too. When John’s mother, Sheila Farebrother, 92, passed away the superstar was devastated.

The two had been estranged for several years but had patched up their differences in recent months and were back in regular communication. When she died in early December 2017, Elton, said he had only seen her a week earlier and was ‘in shock.’

During the equal marriage campaign in Australia, he opened up about his ex-wife. Adding this about the campaign:

‘I love Australia. Its spirit, it’s lack of pretense, it’s passion. I hope it can embrace the honesty and courage that seeks gay marriage as an expression not of desire but of love.’

But no fall-out can compete with his feud with Madonna

Just one of the moments in the long-running feud saw him calling Madonna a ‘f*****g fairground stripper.’

The angry outburst about Madonna came in an interview on Australian news and current affairs programme Sunday Night. He claimed Madonna was ‘horrible’ to Lady Gaga. Particularly personal to him because she is the godmother of his son Zachary.

Going on he argued that Madonna’s career was over and that she had no right to criticise other artists during her MDNA world tour.

Adding: ‘Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger c***.’

And now Elton’s is.

Madonna

One of the first gay men to get a same-sex civil marriage

The British star and his husband David Furnish met over 25 years ago.

They had their civil partnership on 21 December 2005. It was on the first day that same-sex civil unions became law in the UK.

In 2014, when same-sex marriage became legal in the UK, they changed their civil partnership to marriage, with a 21 December ceremony in Windsor.

They have also become the parents of two sons: Zachary (born Christmas Day 2011) and Elijah (aged 3).

He kickstarted Ed Sheeran’s career

In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said ‘a no-brainer not to sign him.’ And loves the fact that one of his songs names checks his son Tiny Dancer. Adding:

‘He’s just got that inevitability of stardom written about him. He doesn’t look like [a star] and that’s what I love about him’

But he also took the Spice Girls, Eminem and H from Steps under his wings.

Thanks, Elton.

But also duetted Don’t Go Breaking My Heart with Ru Paul

The glorious mashup came out of Elton’s Duets album.

The video has Elton and Ru portray various famous couples including Antony and Cleopatra, Sonny and Cher, Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson from Grease, and even Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV.

‘EJ, what took you so long?’ Ru exclaims as the video begins.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation has raised so much money for HIV

So though Elton John is known as many things — an entertainer, an activist, a larger than life figure. His biggest contribution in his career is his charity, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF).

Created in 1992 in the United States, the non-profit operates with the aim of eradicating the AIDS epidemic. Its United Kingdom counterpart was founded a year later.

The Funders for LGBTQ Issues recently recognized it as the ‘largest funder of LGBTQ health programs’ in the US. Also acknowledging them as the ‘largest HIV funder of programs for transgender people’.

Moreover, since it began it has raised $220 million which has been used to support work in 55 countries.
