Elton John’s husband David Furnish gets sworn in as British citizen

David Furnish holds hands of sons Zachary and Elijah as he becomes British citizen.

After living in the United Kingdom for nearly three decades, David Furnish finally became a British citizen today.

‘A very emotional morning for me,’ the husband of Elton John wrote on Instagram.

He posted a touching photo holding the hands of sons Zachary, 5, and Elijah, 3, at his swearing in. They are facing the British flag and a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Without saying so directly, the Canadian-born Furnish touched on the immigration and refugee controversy currently plaguing the United States.

US President Donald Trump last week signed an Executive Order banning immigration from seven mostly Muslim countries.

Wrote Furnish: ‘As an immigrant, I moved to the UK more than 27 years years ago. I was welcomed with open arms. This spirit of acceptance, tolerance and diversity has allowed me to achieve a life beyond my wildest dreams.’

Furnish, 54, began his relationship with John in 1993. They entered into a civil partnership in December 2005 and got married in 2014 – the first year same-sex marriage was legal in the UK.

‘I am a very blessed man, and I am extremely proud to now carry both British and Canadian passports,’ Furnish wrote.
