Time was, you’d be hard-pressed to find any LGBTI character on TV.
But as 2017 comes to a close, British soap Emmerdale has dedicated its entire Christmas Day episode to one of its bisexual characters.
The high profile instalment followed the handsome Robert Sugden (played by Ryan Hawley). After falling into a coma following a car accident, the veteran character must decipher what is real and what is imaginary.
Emmerdale is set in the Yorkshire Dales in Northern England. It has been running since 1972, with the character of Robert first introduced in 1986.
‘It’s about tying up the loose ends of “Robron”‘
Spoiler alert: Robert has been shown to be in an on-again, off-again love affair with Aaron Livesy in recent years.
While their relationship is addressed in the episode, they don’t end up reconciling, as actor Danny Miller (who plays Aaron) told TV Times recently.
‘It’s about tying up the loose ends of “Robron” – working out their future and their past. But it’s not about them getting back together,’ he said.
The soap has a rich history of LGBTI characters. Over the last three decades they’ve included Zoe Tate, Chastity Dingle and Lawrence White.
