Engineer involved in Amtrak crash identified as gay activist Brandon Bostian

'Bostian was active in the Proposition 8 fight'

Engineer involved in Amtrak crash identified as gay activist Brandon Bostian

The engineer who was involved in Tuesday (12 May) night’s Amtrak train crash has been identified as gay activist Brandon Bostian.

His lawyer, and officials at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he received treatment, confirmed the identity of the 32-year-old resident of Queens, New York.

Bostian likes several LGBTI pages on Facebook and was interviewed at a gay marriage protest in 2012.

‘Brandon Bostian, a recent transplant to New York, attended the event. Bostian was active in the Proposition 8 fight, which defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman, in San Francisco,’ a Midtown Gazette story reads.

‘While he is still interested in working for marriage equality, Bostian admitted that he is less enthusiastic this time around. “It’s kind of insulting to have to beg people for my right to marry,” he said. “I feel like we shouldn’t even have to have this fight.”’

According to LinkedIn, Bostian has worked as a passenger engineer at Amtrak for more than four years.

Bostian’s lawyer told ABC News that he had no recollection of the crash and ‘no explanation’ for what happened.

He added that Bostian voluntarily gave a blood sample and his cell phone and is cooperating with authorities.

The National Transportation Safety Board has said Bostian allegedly caused the train to derail by slamming down the emergency brakes as it went through a curve in north Philadelphia at 106 mph — more than double the 50-mph speed limit. The crash killed at least seven people and injured scores of others.
