Eric McCormack says he ‘wouldn’t get anywhere near’ Will & Grace role today

Will & Grace star Eric McCormack believes a gay actor ‘would probably’ play his gay role, if casting happened in 2018.

The straight actor has played Will Truman since the series began in 1998.

But he said if producers were casting the show these days, he ‘wouldn’t get anywhere near’ the role.

‘I think it wasn’t a terrible thing in 1998 that a straight guy played the role,’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald. ‘But I’m glad that times are changing.

‘I’m glad that nowadays a Will Truman would probably be cast with someone who is gay.’

He then added: ‘But does that mean that now when you walk into a casting room you have to state whether you are straight or gay? I don’t know.’

McCormack said playing the iconic gay character has opened LGBTI doors for the straight actor.

He said: ‘The show has given me a chance to give back.’

‘I get to be the straight-guy ambassador to the rest of the world for a community that has been shouting for a long time to be heard and to be recognized,’ he said.

NBC announced Will & Grace will be coming for its ninth season back in January last year.

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salkes explained the announcement at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena.

She said: ‘We started talking with creators/executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan about producing new episodes right after they shot the secret reunion show back in September.

‘Few things cut through the clutter these days, especially in comedy, and Will and Grace is one of the best,’ she said.

Producers of the show just recently announced it’s getting a renewal for a third season of the revival.

McCormack is also set to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
