Stan and Olli are just your regular penguin gay couple.
A pair of two male king penguins, they didn’t quite live up to the zookeepers’ plans for them to breed with the females at Berlin zoo.
Brought to Berlin under the European Conservation Programme (EEP) in a bid to breed more baby king penguins, it turns out they didn’t do quite what was expected.
‘They’re gay, as far as we know,’ Christiane Reiss, the Berlin Zoo spokesperson said. ‘They never bred. And when it came to courtship, they only mated with one another.’
But instead of being too frustrated, Berlin decided to send them off to Hamburg. There, they will be in a colony of just male penguins. That includes another gay couple, Juan and Carlos.
Somewhat strangely, Hamburg zoo has decided to rename the couple.
‘We’re calling them Kalle and Grobi now,’ keeper Dave Nelde said, according to The Local.
