DC Comics fans are calling for writers of the Batman series to make The Joker gay… again.
The Joker has a long history of homosexuality but writers suppressed it in the 90s, according to some fan theories.
In a change.org petition to DC writer Geoff Johns, Elena Shestakova wrote: ‘The Joker was and always had been homosexual.’
‘This opinion was shared by other comic books authors and artists for decades. That is why it’s so important to me and other queer readers to return his homosexuality,’ she said.
She goes on to explain The Joker has an 80-year history but for more than half of it, he was openly gay.
He even confessed his feelings for Batman and showed an active interest in other men. There was also the Joker’s unnamed boyfriend in the graphic novel Devil’s Advocate.
But when writers got their hands on his character in the 90s, they erased his homosexuality and introduced Harley Quinn as his girlfriend.
The Joker ain’t jokin’
The petition started five months ago, but recently gained traction on social media.
In response to why they signed the petition, one signatory argued: ‘Heck, what can I say?
‘Given the fact that Batman deliberately tries to project an image of the stereotypically masculine, alpha-male-like hero through his appearance and reserved demeanor, the Joker serves as a perfect foil to him, with his eccentric behavior and over-the-top emotionality.
‘I think the stories that explicitly underlined The Joker’s obsession with Batman as a romantic one (Dark Knight Returns, Scott Snyder’s works) hit closest to home when it came to depicting their relationship and categorizing the type of rivalry that they had, always giving it the edge of a tragic love story,’ they wrote.
Others took to social to rally the LGBTI community to contribute to the petition.
One tweeted: ‘The joker is already gay. His obsession with batman and the way he treats Harley is telling.

But some people believe The Joker is asexual. One fan wrote: ‘the joker has to be ACE. it’s an amazing pun.’
