I Am Michael finally gets a US release date and a new trailer.

The Gus Van Sant produced film premiered in 2015 at the Sundance Film Festival but had not been released in the US yet. It will make its cinematic debut on 27 January in select theaters and on VOD.

The film tells the real-life story of Michael Glatze who went from gay rights activist and journalist in San Francisco to becoming a Christian minister in Wyoming.

Michael Glatze renounced his gay ‘lifestyle’ in 2007 after a health scare, and eventually married a woman, who is played by Emma Roberts in the film.

Zachary Quinto plays Glatze’s former boyfriend, Bennet, while Darryl Hannah and Charlie Carver co-stars.

I Am Michael is directed by Justin Kelly and is the first film he made with Franco. The pair later made King Cobra which tells the true story of gay porn star Brent Corrigan’s rise to fame. King Cobra was released this year, and is featured on our 7 best gay films of 2016.

The script for I Am Michael was adapted from a New York Times Magazine article entitled My Ex-Gay Friend by Benoit Denizen-Lewis.
