First LGBTI superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been named

Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie in the Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok

After years of promising more LGBTI representation, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has revealed its first LGBTI superhero.

Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson will have a LGBTI storyline in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

In the film the Valkyrie will take over the reins as the leader of New Asgard, after Thor bestowed the honor on her in Avengers: Endgame.

Thompson who is attracted to men and women, teased the LGBTI plot at San Diego Comic Con.

Speaking in Hall H, Thompson said Valkyrie had a lot to get done, including finding love.

‘As new king, she needs to find her queen,’ Thompson said.

‘That will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted.’

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told i09 Thompson’s comments were true. Feige had promised more LGBTI representation in Marvel films for years and seems to have finally made good on that promise.

‘The answer is yes,’ Feige said of Valkyrie’s LGBTI story arc.

‘How that impacts the story remains to be seen with that level of representation you’ll see across our films, not in just Thor 4.

Speaking in June, Feige promised even more LGBTI characters in the MCU.

‘We haven’t been shy about saying that that’s coming and that there’s much more prominent LGBT heroes in the future,’ Feige said.

Marvel fans have long hoped Valkyrie might be LGBTI and even created fan art imagining a relationship between her and Captain Marvel.

That relationship has the endorsement of Captain Marvel actress, Brie Larson. ‘We cute’ she said in response to the fan art.
