First look at biopic on ‘bisexual icon’ Mr. Rogers starring Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks plays late TV host Mr. Rogers in upcoming biopic

It’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood as the first trailer for the biopic on Mr. Rogers has been released.

Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks portrays the late TV host in the movie by Marielle Heller. Heller was behind the camera of LGBTI movie Can You Ever Forgive Me? and teen dramedy The Diary Of A Teenage Girl.

Mr. Rogers will have his own biopic

The movie will address the friendship between Fred Rogers (Hanks) and Esquire journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), assigned to profile him.

At first cynical towards the beloved TV host and puppeteer, Vogel ends up setting his prejudices aside and discovers a beautiful friendship.

Vogel’s character is inspired by real-life Esquire journalist Tom Junod, who wrote a profile on the TV host in 1998.

A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, set to premiere on 22 November, also stars Susan Kelechi Watson as Junod’s wife Andrea and Chris Cooper as Vogel’s father Jerry.

Earlier this year, queer Twitter hailed Rogers as ‘bisexual icon’ thanks to a viral tweet on his sexuality.

While he never used the label ‘bisexual’, he did express his sexual attraction as fluid.

Upon this discovery, users found screenshots of the biography and exact quote. One user, @GabrielLunesce, posted a screencap of the passage from Google Books.
