Footballer fined for homophobic tweet

British footballer Michael Ball has been fined for a homophobic tweet about gay soap star Antony Cotton.

The Football Association made the former Everton and Manchester City defender pay £6,000 for making hateful comments about the Coronation Street actor on Twitter.

Ball messaged Cotton while he was in reality show I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, writing: 'That fucking queer. Get back to your sewing machine in Corrie you moaning bastard.'

The 32 year old player admitted improper conduct and has been warned about his future behavior.

It is not the first time a UK footballer has faced disciplinary action for making homophobic comments on Twitter.

Oxford City striker Lee Steele was sacked at the beginning of January for tweeting an offensive message about gay rugby player and Celebrity Big Brother contestant Gareth Thomas.
