Fred Phelps, founder of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church, is allegedly on his death bed

Nathan Phelps, the son of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Sr., announced on Facebook his father is on his deathbed.

The younger Phelps, who left the organization approximately 37 years, also stated the leader of the virulently anti-gay group was ‘excommunicated’ in 2013 August.

‘I’ve learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the "God Hates Fags" Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the "church" back in August of 2013,’ Nathan Phelps writes. ‘He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas.’

‘I’m not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made,’ the younger Phelps continued.

‘I feel sad for all the hurt he’s caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I’m bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.’

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal a Westboro spokesperson confirmed Phelps Sr. is  patient at Midland Hospice. The spokesperson declined to describe the pastor’s illness.

Phelps was disbarred from law practice  in 1989.

Stephen Maglott, who writes on faith, government and social justice, said the following to GSN in an email correspondence:

‘Westboro Baptist Church has distinguished themselves through their un-Christ-like meanness and cruelty. Now we are learning that they have kicked their founder out, and have barred some family members from seeing him on his deathbed,’ Maglott wrote.

‘This is a new low for these creatures,’ the writer continued. ‘I just don’t understand how anyone can be so depraved and consistently cruel. Have you no scruples, Westboro? Have you no humanity?’
