Friends creator said LGBTI jokes would have been changed if made today

Was Friends there for you?

Friends creator Marta Kauffman has admitted she would have changed the trans jokes if the show was made today.

Speaking to USA Today on 29 April, Kauffman said she would switch up the LGBTI jokes in the show.

When the US show dropped on Netflix, many viewers argued the show hadn’t particularly aged well.

What did she say?

Back in the 90s when Friends aired, several story-lines ran without much thought.

But through re-runs and the show being made available to stream on Netflix in 2015, some people have raised issues with its handling of LGBTI topics.

From Ross having an issue with his son playing with a doll to Chandler’s transphobia against his father, who moonlights as a Vegas drag queen.

Or an episode co-starring Brad Pitt in which he, as a high schooler, spread a rumor that fellow classmate Rachel was a ‘hermaphrodite.’

In response, Kauffman said she’d reconsider the tone of those jokes.

She said: ‘I think we didn’t have the knowledge about transgender people back then, so I’m not sure if we use the appropriate terms.

‘I don’t know if I would have known those terms back then. I think that’s the biggest one.

‘I might have not done the hermaphrodite stuff today if I had that to do over in the one with Brad Pitt.’
