G-A-Y Bar sets HIV test world record

Londoners have set a new Guinness World Record for administering the most HIV tests in eight hours to mark World AIDS Day.

G-A-Y Bar, one of the most famous bars on Old Compton Street, Soho – London’s gay district – hosted medics from nearby sexual health clinic, 56 Dean Street, who tested 467 people from 2pm to 10pm on 1 December.

And G-A-Y donated £5 for every test performed to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

The 56 Dean Street team used the world’s fastest HIV antibody test, which provides a result in just 60 seconds after taking a finger-prick blood sample. They also offered support services for those who tested positive but organisers have not yet been able to tell GSN how many people were diagnosed with the virus at the event.

People who are aware they have HIV are three and a half times less likely to pass the virus on and early diagnosis significantly improves doctor’s ability to control the virus in positive people.
