Gambia arrests three men for gay sex

Gambian authorities have arrested three men for gay sex, state television reported yesterday.

The men, whose faces were covered, were detained following a security operation and confessed they are gay, according to the broadcast. Their nationalities were not named.

‘We go around in search of suspected individuals and in the course of the investigations we arrested the men and they have confessed that they have engaged in these inhuman acts,’ the report said.

During the broadcast, the National Intelligence Agency appealed to the public, especially parents and landlords, to help them root out homosexuality.

The global community has condemned Gambian President Yahya Jammeh for signing a law in October that punishes ‘aggravated homosexuality’ with up to life in prison.

Earlier this month, the EU withdrew millions of euros in aid to the country in response as the Muslim-majority West African nation looks more to the Middle East for support.
