Game of Thrones star: Hollywood has a ‘big problem’ with homophobia

Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington

At the Toronto International Film Festival, currently ongoing, Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington sat down with other Hollywood figures to discuss their industry’s problem with homophobia.

Harrington is in Canada to promote Xavier Dolan’s new film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.

‘There’s a big problem, I think, with the idea of masculinity and homosexuality, that they can’t somehow go hand-in-hand,’ he told Variety while discussing the film.

He was joined by bisexual co-star Thandie Newton and Dolan.

Harrington also expressed disbelief that Hollywood can’t ‘have someone in a Marvel movie who’s gay in real life who plays some superhero’.

‘I mean, when is that going to happen?’ he questioned.

Newton also jumped in, comparing it to the world of sports.

‘The few people that have stepped into their true selves in an uncompromising way, if we look in ten years time, the effect that will have,’ she said. ‘It is changing, but we have to get behind those changes and keep pushing it.’

Dolan finally added that while more and more actors have come out, Hollywood still doesn’t give them the career they deserve.

‘My friends say, “I’m now free, but I also know that I’m not going to get the career I once wanted, but I’m at peace with that because at least I can be who I am.”‘

In the movie, Harrington plays the closeted actor Donovan, who shares a written correspondence with an 11-year-old British boy, Rupert (Jacob Tremblay). Ten years after Donovan’s death, Rupert reflects on their letters.

Natalie Portman, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, and bisexual actor Bella Thorne also appear in the film

The movie had its world premiere at TIFF today (10 September).
