Gay cowboys and cowgirls ride into Florida for weekend rodeo

Grab your partner and do-si-do to the Sunshine State this weekend for the gay rodeo Sunshine Stampede.

Kicking off Thursday 3 April with a film showing of Queens and Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo, the weekend will see rodeo experts, along with cowboy (and cowgirl) lovers, head to Fort Lauderdale for an event organized by the Florida Gay Rodeo Association (FGRA). Tickets for the documentary screening can be purchased online at fgra.org/stampede.

After the film showing, the Sunshine Stampede Kickoff Party takes over the Village Pub Wilton Manors.

On Friday 4 April, the welcome pool party and registration will take place at the Sunshine Stampede’s host hotel the Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Plantation Hotel.

The main events on Saturday and Sunday will be held at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. For rodeo newbies, the main attractions include:

  • Rough stock events: Bull riding, steer riding and chute dogging
  • Speed events: Pole bending, flag racing and barrel racing
  • Roping events: Calf roping on foot, breakaway roping and team roping
  • Camp events: Goat dressing, steer decorating and wild drag racing

Saturday night Bill’s Filling Station in Wilton Manors will host a party for competitors and event attendees from 9 pm to closing time, and the closing awards ceremony will be held at the Renaissance Hotel’s ballroom at 7 pm on Sunday.

The wild drag racing team with the best costume on Sunday will win a $300 (€218) jackpot, and by the end of the weekend the FGRA will award $5,000 (€3,625) in prize money.

To purchase tickets, general admission costs $20 (€15) for a one-day ticket and $35 (€25) for the full weekend. Tickets can be purchased online at fgra.org/stampede.
