Gay football player Michael Sam welcomed by new teammates

Openly gay US National Football League (NFL) player Michael Sam has been accepted with open arms by his teammates.

Sam, who made history by being the first openly gay player to be drafted to a major NFL team, has spoken about fitting in with his new team, the St. Louis Rams.

‘They respect me as a human being and as a football player,’ he said.

His teammates were not short in praise of Sam, in particular, his sense of humour.

‘If anybody had any reservations about who he was to begin with, he wins them over pretty quick,’ said T.J. Moe. ‘They’re laughing so hard, they can’t breathe.’

Players Michael Brockers and Chris Long said the media storm surrounding Sam is of little importance to them as football players.

‘We don’t really focus on the outside stuff,’ Brockers said. ‘He’s our brother, he’s on our D-line and that’s where it sits.’

‘Only the media cares,’ said Long. ‘The players don’t care, we just care about what kind of football player you are.’

The majority of the focus has been on Sam’s sexuality, in particular, the kiss between him and his boyfriend which caused a great deal of outrage from conservative critics.

However, Sam says he is now concentrating on sport.

‘You’ve got to learn a lot more plays, you’ve got to know what you’re doing,’ he said.

‘You’re supposed to perform at a high level and I’m doing pretty good.’

The accepting comments from his teammates are a far cry from the experiences some gay athletes have.

An unidentified German soccer player spoke to the press this week about his experiences being a gay footballer.

‘After a training session I walked into the shower and I realised all of my teammates weren’t naked, but were wearing underpants,’ he said.

‘Of course I was totally shocked, and first I didn’t know why. Then I slowly realized: It’s because of me.’
