Gay icon Patti LaBelle invites singing superfan of her sweet potato pie to Thanksgiving dinner

It was just over two weeks ago that James Wright posted his epic review of Patti LaBelle’s sweet potato pie on YouTube.

Since then, more than 3.7 million people have watched the video, taste tests have taken place on The Today Show and The Talk, and scores of other video reviews done by other people have popped up on YouTube each day.

Meanwhile WalMart, where the pies are sold exclusively, the pies are selling so briskly that the retailer cannot keep them in stock.

Grammy winner LaBelle, who has long had legions of gay fans, initially had called Wright to thank him for his video. Then she did one better by inviting the Los Angeles-based entertainer to her home in Philadelphia for Thanksgiving dinner.

It also happened to be Wright’s birthday.

He writes on Facebook: ‘This has been the best Thanksgiving ever and it’s also been the best birthday ever and I’m very very grateful. And at this point in my life I’m kind of speechless but we serve an awesome God – a God that can change your life around in less than a second. I seek Him so I can be more and more like Him daily. Like I always say when I’m done the whole world is going to be smiling. Thank you Ms. Patti Labelle.’

LaBelle also sang Wright a birthday song and gave him a Louis Vuitton duffel bag as a present because, she said, ‘he is going to be a world traveler.’

LaBelle added, ‘God has brought another baby angel into my life.’

Below is Wright and Labelle singing and dancing together along with the original video that started it all:
