A gay man stands accused of deliberately infecting at least 10 lovers with HIV, by ripping holes in the condom.
A court heard one testimony from a lover who claims Daryll Rowe, 26, a hairdresser from Edinburgh, also sent a message confessing he’s ‘riddled’ with HIV after having rough sex.
The 22-year-old student, who cannot be named, gave a video testimony in court. He said he met Rowe on a dating app in January 2016.
The man told the court: ‘I remember not really enjoying it.
‘There were moments when I was like, I want to get up and go.
‘Afterwards I went to the toilet and the condom was on the sink and I noticed that it… was completely broken. Like the whole top of it was off,’ he testified.
The man approached Rowe to ask about his HIV status.
In response, Rowe eventually allegedly said: ‘Yes, I’m riddled by the way.’
He then blocked the 22-year-old’s mobile number.
The man also testified to receiving anti-viral drugs to prevent contracting HIV, as well as treatment for genital herpes.
Rowe denies infecting five men with the virus and attempting to infect a further five men.
Rough sex to increase chance of infection, court hears
As well as cutting holes in condoms, Rowe also stands accused of deliberately having rough sex with lovers. Rough sex can make tears in the rectum, which increase the chances of passing HIV onto someone else.
In the early stages of the trial, another man said Rowe pressured him into having rough bareback sex.
The alleged victim told the court about a time they had bareback sex outdoors: ‘He was huffing and puffing and saying “you need to do it if we’re going to be together”.’
He added: ‘I felt like we had to do it. So we did.’
The jury was told the unprotected sex was interrupted by a passing cyclist.
After, Rowe was hoping they’d continue, but the alleged victim stopped him.
Rowe also texted one of his alleged victims: ‘Maybe you have the fever cos I came inside you and I have HIV, lol. Whoops!’
The court heard Rowe called one of his victims and laughed as he revealed his positive status.
He allegedly said: ‘I ripped the condom. You’re so stupid, you didn’t even know.’
Police claim Daryll Rowe ‘lied’ about being HIV positive
After two people initially came forward, police arrested Rowe. But he denied being HIV positive and claimed someone was framing him.
He skipped bail and this led to a nationwide manhunt.
But during the initial interrogation process, Rowe was asked if he had HIV and he replied: ‘No.’ He then claimed to have been tested six months before the interview and was clear at the time.
Rowe claimed a man named ‘Ian’ sent him ‘mean messages.’
He told police at the time: ‘He sends big long messages and sometimes I just block him.
‘He’s about 30, he’s not young. We first started talking on Tinder.
‘He’s seen me on Grindr. Every time I download it, he messages me,’ Rowe said.
Then in a later interview with the police, Rowe said: ‘If these allegations are being made, this is either a big dramatic lie or what if they are just trying to single me out because gay people can be very horrible?
‘This is one of the reasons why I left Edinburgh because gay people can be very horrible up there,’ he said.
The trial continues.
