Socalled gay porn mid life celebration

Gay porn is causing more carbon emissions than at least 121 countries, a survey suggests.

Digital technology is responsible for hundreds of millions of tonnes of all carbon dioxide emissions.

Ten hours of high definition footage takes up more data than the text of the English language of Wikipedia. Keeping, processing and streaming the data due to the electricity and servers is a strain on global resources, according to experts.

And watching adult films accounts for over 4% of all of those emissions, according to a new study.

Climate Crisis: The Unsustainable Use of Online Video, reported by think-tank The Shift Project, highlights porn makes up 27% of all videos viewed online.

Gay porn responsible for ‘invisible’ carbon emissions

All porn ’emits’ just under 100 million tonnes.

Gay male porn makes up around 21% of videos viewed, according to Pornhub. Lesbian porn, however, is the biggest category on the website so the numbers are likely far, far higher.

This roughly suggests a minimum of 21 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

This is more than the carbon emissions put out than 121 countries across the world, including Kenya, Estonia and Croatia.

Meanwhile, video-on-demand services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime reportedly generated the same volume of greenhouse gas emissions as the entire economy of Chile.

Authors are proposing a form of ‘digital sobriety’. This means to reduce the use and the size of videos. However, this would require certain regulations to be put in place.

They write: ‘From the standpoint of climate change and other planetary boundaries, it is not a question of being “for” or “against” pornography, telemedicine, Netflix or emails: the challenge is to avoid a use deemed precious from being impaired by the excessive consumption of another use deemed less essential.

‘This makes it a societal choice, to be arbitrated collectively to avoid the imposition of constraints on our uses against our will and at our expense.

They also say: ‘In the 21st century, not choosing is no longer a viable option.’
