Gay porn star David Enrique Meza, 27, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday (11 December) for the murder of Jake Merendino, 52.

Meza, the San Diego native who went by the screen name Mario Romo, was first charged at the end of 2015.

Police found Merendino, a wealthy Texan, with a number of fatal stab wounds in a Mexican ravine near the US border on 2 May 2015. He was killed in Baja, California and also had a slashed throat.

According to prosecutors, Meza and Merendino met online in 2013 and soon began a romantic relationship. However, at the same time, Mexa continued pursuing a relationship with his then-girlfriend, Taylor Marie Langston. Officials also indicted her for the crime.

They also revealed Meza created a handwritten will, leaving the entirety of Merendino’s estate to himself.

Mexican officials found Merendino’s body around 3 am on 2 May. Investigators said Meza was seen crossing the US border by motorcycle about an hour later.

Meza and Langston claimed they were visiting a friend, Jose Aguilera, in Tijuana, as an alibi. However, Aguilera told investigators he had not seen the couple for over a year and that they never visited.

A long criminal case

Meza spent at least 10 months in custody before a criminal case began.

On the two-year anniversary of Merendino’s death, was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

‘One can’t even imagine the torture and torment Mr. Merendino experienced,’ Judge Jeffrey Miller said about Meza’s sentencing.

He also described the murder as an ‘inhumane, depraved act’.
