Helping others: Gay rugby star Gareth Thomas befriends homeless man

Gareth Thomas has shown the true spirit of Christmas by thinking of those in more need than him. And we love him for it.

He told his 250,000 Twitter followers this week how he has befriended a local homeless man.

Festive friendship offered to those in need

The message read: ‘Everyday I pass this man, I buy him coffee, I talk to him, I give him some money.’

‘With the money, he has saved it and bought waterproof clothes and boots.

‘Oh and he’s homeless, but the relevance is, HES (sic) MY FRIEND.’

Thomas ended his touching post with a love heart emoji.

Fans of the rugby legend were quick to show their support by retweeting it more than 5,000 times and giving it 62,000 likes.

One follower, @AnfieldAn wrote: ’Great to read this, amazing knowing that he would have something to look forward to each day because of you. That’s enough to make the world a little better, great work.’

But it goes further. Thomas’ tweet has prompted others to join in the festive goodwill to offer help, too.

London-based outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse tweeted the rugby ace to offer his new friend some more products for free.

Others also offered to provide free drinks and food to the unnamed homeless man.

Thomas has faced challenges of his own recently. Last month he was the victim of a horrendous homophobic attack in Cardiff.

We think it’s fantastic that Thomas has shown the true meaning of the festive season.

Let’s hope we can all do our bit to help others around us at this difficult time of the year.
