George & Amal Clooney donate $1 million to the SPLC

George and Amal Clooney donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in the wake of the violence and hate in Charlottesville.

White nationalists and Neo-Nazis had gathered to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee. Counter-protesters gathered to object hate and bigotry. One counter-protester, Heather Heyer, died in the ensuing violence.

The nonprofit organization announced the donation on their website on Monday. The Clooney Foundation for Justice made the donation possible.

The foundation seeks ‘to advance justice in courtrooms, classrooms and communities around the world’ and the Clooneys serve as co-presidents.

Both George and Amal Clooney are long-time advocates of equality and civil rights. George Clooney has long been outspoken in his acting career, going so far as being arrested in 2012. Meanwhile, Amal Clooney’s career as an international law and human rights lawyer speaks for itself.

‘We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States,’ the couple said in a statement. ‘What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate.’

They further told Deadline: ‘There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.’

The SPLC is a nonprofit that fights and monitors domestic hate groups and extremists in the United States. It currently watches more than 1,600 groups. They recently received another $1 million from Apple.

‘Like George and Amal Clooney, we were shocked by the size, ugliness, and ferocity of the white supremacist gathering in Charlottesville,’ SPLC president Richard Cohen stated. ‘It was a reflection of just how much Trump’s incendiary campaign and presidency has energized the radical right. We are deeply grateful to the Clooney Foundation for standing with us at this critical moment in our country’s fight against hate.’
