Disney is a pretty pro-gay as a company, but their representation of the LGBTI community is severely lacking in its animated and Marvel films.
While they have tipped their toe in with showing a lesbian relationship in Once Upon A Time, people believe it is time that we see a same-sex relationship in an animated or a superhero film.
It’s no wonder following the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag, which called for a lesbian couple in Frozen 2, that fans are now hoping for Captain America to get a boyfriend in the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Many see that it makes more sense for Cap to fall in love with Bucky Barnes, his best friend, than the rather rushed and awkward hetero-pairing at the end of Captain America: Civil War.
Some have criticized the campaign, saying it is not right to sexualise the friendship between two apparent heterosexual men. Others disagree with retconning the sexuality of a superhero in the name of representation, and instead suggest featuring LGBTI superheroes from the Marvel comic books or creating new ones.
But if there’s anything to go by, it seems there’s a lot of support for #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend because it is painfully important for queer kids to know a superhero who they admire can be just like them

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend I don’t understand how you think dating his dead girlfriend’s niece is less creepy than just dating a dude.

#GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend because after three movies about Steve and Bucky’s relationship, it would come naturally.
