Gus Kenworthy slams homophobes over Pride ski event comments

Gus Kenworthy.

Openly gay skier Gus Kenworthy has taken to his Twitter account to shut down detractors of an LGBTI ski event in Colorado.

Kenworthy tweeted screengrabs of an Instagram post promoting Breck Pride Week. The event will take place 3-7 April in popular ski resort Breckenridge, Colorado.

Kenworthy ‘saddened’ by homophobia

The picture features skiers carrying the rainbow flag down a slope. Kenworthy also posted screengrabs of some of the most homophobic comments Instagram users have posted below the picture.

‘Always saddened by the homophobia on Pride posts,’ Kenworthy says.

‘If seeing a rainbow flag while you’re on vacation upsets you then please do the world a favor and stay the fuck at home.’

He furthermore added: ‘Thank you to the many ski resorts that designate a week to making more people feel welcomed, included & safe!’

The comments

‘Okay, my question is, why don’t we have a straight event for those who are straight, why does being lgbt make you more special than anyone else?’ one comment reads.

‘Just keep to being a ski resort nothing more,’ another user told Breckenridge.

Kenworthy had previously commented on the original Instagram post by the ski resort.

‘Wow… Saddened by all the negative comments. Kudos to any resort that designates a week to making more people feel welcomed, included and safe. If you are really that upset about seeing a rainbow flag while you’re on vacation please just stay at home.’
