American singer Halsey took the stage as part of The Voice finale, aired on Tuesday 18 December on NBC.
The bisexual artist, who had been a Battle Round adviser during this season, performed with dancer and actress Jade Chynoweth.
The two danced on Without Me, Halsey’s latest, intimate single. Their stunning performance blew fans away, but some didn’t like the way their choreography portrayed a same-sex relationship and deemed it inappropriate.
What the… @NBCTheVoice ?!?! This performance by Halsey is totally not appropriate for the #VoiceFinale Good Lord. Know your audience. Kennedy just turned 14. Who do you think is watching? Trashy. You’re better than this.

#thevoice pls tell Halsey this is a a family show . Talented but too much PDA in the dance.

To say the least disappointed. Explain that to young kids that are watching.

I can’t believe you put them on air! Sickening and NOT family friendly. I’m throwing up

Halsey hits back
Halsey offered a response to the criticism received in an Instagram post.
‘Lots of people angry because we performed the story of a wlw couple and their emotional journey,’ she wrote.
‘Representation matters. I’m proud I got to put this on so many television screens tonight. Younger me is stoked.’
Halsey also thanked Chynoweth for ‘being the bombest human being ever and bringing this vision to life’.
Jade Chynoweth’s message to Halsey
Chynoweth also took to Instagram to thank Halsey.
‘This performance not only changed my life, but will hopefully change many others. Thank you so much @iamhalsey for trusting me with your vision and message. It is beyond an honor to share the stage with you and showcase a story of a same-sex relationship and the struggles that may come with that.’
She furthermore added: ‘You’re such a badass in all spectrums of life and I’m feel so humbled to have been blessed with your spirit. You are not only extremely talented but you are a beautiful person, which is rare especially in the our industry.’
