A newspaper in Turkey has called the victims of the Orlando shooting ‘perverts and deviants’.
Yeni Akit is known for its Islamist views and its ties with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
It’s headline ‘Death toll rises to 50 in bar where perverted homosexuals go!’ has sparked outrage on social media.
Some said the use of an exclamation mark indicates Yeni Akit is celebrating the attack rather than condemning it.
What fewer know is the publication was fined in January 2012 over comments published in 2008 describing gay people as ‘perverts’.
Experts have found hundreds of examples of hate in its pages, with targets including Jews, Armenians, atheists, secularists, communists and feminists as well as LGBTI people.
It is now known that 49 people were killed by Omar Mateen in Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the early hours of Sunday. The death toll of 50 includes Mateen himself. Another 53 people were injured.
